The museum was based on the donation of their large collection by the spouses Paolo and Ornella Ricca from Cosenza. In 1994 Paolo Ricca, his wife Ornella and the brother Raffaele founded the cultural association «The Green Living Room» to promote cultural initiatives (exhibitions, meeting etc.) about various topics. During the preparation of an event, Paolo came up with the idea of looking for his first grade book and thus began attending antiques fairs in search of old school objects. Years of collecting led to the formation of one of the most outstanding private collections in Italy, which was exhibited in various events (in Cosenza, Corigliano Calabro, Amantea, Castrovillari, Bracciano and Brescia). In 2007, on the occasion of an international symposium of the Macerata university, the exhibition «Between school-desks and exercise books» was held and curated by Paolo Ricca. In 2009 Ricca came back to Macerata again to expose his collection in the exhibition «Between school desks. Daily school-life in Italy between XIX and XX centuries», curated by Roberto Sani and mounted in the former classical high school of Civitanova Alta (MC). On these occasions Paolo Ricca decided to donate his collection to the university, with the aim to enhance it with a permanent exhibition annexed to the Centre for documentation and research on history of schoolbook and children’s literature. So was born the project which led to the establishment of the School museum «Paolo and Ornella Ricca» in 2010. Since then, the museum has enriched its collections over the years thanks to the generosity of an increasing number of donors.
